Ordinances Against Natural Lawns?
Recently the MSCA has learned of three Monte Sano residents with natural lawns who have received official letters from the City of Huntsville stating that they were “out of compliance” with various ordinances (no grass taller than 8 inches, etc). The letters further threaten to send in city crews to mow the natural lawns because they constitute a “nuisance.” Many residents have spent much love, care, and expense to have a natural lawn that is more eco-friendly, and attracts bees, birds, butterflies and other pollinators.
We are trying to determine if the three homes were isolated cases or if this is a neighborhood-wide enforcement effort.
If you’ve been contacted by the Huntsville’s Community Development Office about this issue, please let us know by contacting us at info@montesanocivicassociation.org
We will reach out to the city this week and see if we can resolve this issue. Some of the ordinances were developed decades ago before the value of natural lawns was understood.
Our neighbors are letting their grass and wildflowers grow, not because they don’t care, but because they do care.
